Magruder was the son of Alexander McGruder, the elder, and Margaret. Magruder's family included several literate and privileged servants to the Drummond family, including the Earl of Perth. Magruder himself was not a Drummond or a MacGregor. Magruder's name has a 250-year history in America, while the name MacGregor has none.
There is persuasive circumstantial evidence that Magruder was a MacGregor.
