Yankee Candle
The company was founded by Michael Kittredge, a resident of Holyoke, Massachusetts, who created his first scented candle in 1969 from melted crayons as a gift for his mother. Neighbours began expressing interest in buying his creations, and Kittredge started producing them in larger quantities with the help of his high school friends, Donald MacIver and Susan Obremski. Obremski's father invented a "heated room", enabling cost-saving liquid wax deliveries at the first factory site in Holyoke, and Obremski herself invented a turntable taper wheel that doubled production while reducing the need for labour.
In 1975, Susan Obremski managed the first Yankee Candle Shop in South Hadley, Massachusetts. The company slowly expanded, moving to South Deerfield in 1983, where its flagship store opened in 1982. The flagship store features all available Yankee Candles, as well as kitchen and home accessories, New England crafts, gifts, and collectibles. Visitors can dip their own candles, make wax moulds of their hands, or create unique candles. There is also a candle-making museum and a Hillside Pizza cafe on site.
