The Yankee Candle Company was started in South Hadley, Massachusetts, by 16-year-old Michael Kittredge, who would later go on to found the company. It was Christmas 1969, and the teenager, who was short on money, crafted a candle made from household wax, crayons, string, and a used milk carton as a gift for his mother. A neighbour, impressed by the creation, convinced Kittredge to sell it to her, and with the proceeds, he made two more candles—one for his mother and another to sell.
With the help of his father, Kittredge opened a small retail shop, which eventually led to hundreds of retail stores and over 35,000 authorized retailers worldwide. The company slowly expanded, and in 1983, it moved to South Deerfield, where its headquarters are currently located. The first scented apothecary candle jars hit the market, with early favourite fragrances including Bayberry, Cinnamon, Cranberry, Pine, and French Vanilla.
The company has changed hands multiple times and grown exponentially, surpassing the $1 billion mark several years ago. In 2013, Jarden acquired Yankee Candle for $1.75 billion. A further merger in 2016 saw Jarden purchased by Newell Rubbermaid (now Newell Brands), which also acquired Smith Mountain Industries, the makers of the Woodwick brand of candles, in 2017.
